The Music Director

Erik Clayton,  Director of Music

We are delighted to introduce Erik Clayton as our new Director of Music. He has an outstanding and extensive background in music as an accompanist (piano and organ), choral director and conductor.

Erik is a native of State College and received his degrees from Pennsylvania State University.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education (choral emphasis), a Bachelor of Music in Performance (piano) and a Master of Music in Performance (piano).  In addition to attaining these degrees, Erik has been a graduate teaching assistant (piano), conductor of the Penn State University Chamber Choir, organist and accompanist for churches, and accompanist, instructor, chamber choir director for Penn State Music Camp.

Erik, his wife, Katie, and daughter, Genavieve (15 months) have relocated from State College to a home on Louisa Street in Williamsport.  Erik will be working with Kent Weaver as a choral director at the Williamsport Area High School.  His references tell of his great ability to develop singers of varying skill levels into a pleasing, enthusiastic choir.

The Organ

The enlarged chamber provided a century ago now houses its third organ. Built and installed by Austin Organs, Inc., it is an instrument of 2,031 pipes comprising three manual divisions and pedals arranged in 35 ranks and 2 extensions. The Great chest is mounted in the arch facing the Sanctuary; the Positiv and portions of the Pedal occupy the arch facing the Nave; and the Swell chest is enclosed in a box which opens towards both openings. All pipes displayed in the facades are mute and are revised from the previous casework. For the best advantage of tuning, the chest tops have been arranged at nearly the same level and are winded on the universal air system. There are 27 voices, or timbres, controlled by 35 registers, or stops. The console is the stop-key style and included in its appointments are a full complement of inter- and intra-manual couplers and a generous number of combination pistons.

Space has been prepared near the rear of the Nave for an Antiphonal division that will be built from pipes and chests reserved from the previous instrument. When completed, this division will support the congregation in hymn singing and the Choir in its processionals.

The action of the organ is electro-pneumatic, with plastic used instead of leather; the console is all-electric in function. The wind pressure is 3 3/4 inches.
